Set Topics for Monthly Competitions 2009
Feb: “Closed Landscape”: an image in which the land form and its natural features are the subject, but
not
including the sky within the frame of the image. A structure, animal or person may be included but must
not dominate the image.
Apr: “Low Light”: An image taken under candlelight, firelight, moonlight or other low light source. The low
light source or sources must be evident in the image but must not be the main focus of the picture. This
topic is designed to be a skills competition for handling the photography of objects in low light situations.
Sunlight (including at dawn and dusk), flash, or strong artificial lighting must not be used.
June: “Extreme close up”: The focus of the image must be a portion of an object photographed in such a
way that it creates a new identity of its own by virtue of its isolation from the original object. The end result
may or may not be identifiable, may be large or small, and the extreme close up effect may be achieved
with any type of lens (telephoto to macro).
Aug:” Portrait in the environment”: A portrait of an adult (not children or animals!!) taken in their
environment which says something about the person.  The subject must be the person but the image
contains enough additional information to explain what that person is doing, their interest, their work, etc.
Oct: ”Passage of Time”: An image or images portraying the process of something changing over time – eg
season to season; growth to decay to regrowth; birth to maturity to death, objects weathering or decaying
from “as new” to “ old, new designs of a product replacing the old.. This is a chance to try a Triptych (see
the rules for explanation).
