A reinvigorated public entertainment and cultural space including a restored Palais Theatre and a new neighbouring public plaza is being investigated. Potential uses include a dance and music venue, cinema, galleries, a bar or nightclub, boutique hotel, reception and conference facilities, cafes and some retail.

Q. Will there be significant retail created on the Triangle Site?
A. The broad vision is to provide significant new areas of open space with entertainment and recreation facilities. It is envisaged that these will be supported by some related retail uses but that these would not be significant.
The UDF is clear that the site should provide new opportunities for theatre and entertainment to support the precinct's traditional entertainment role. A century ago, the vision and planning of Carlo Catani and the Foreshore Committee produced Luna Park, the Palais, the Palais de Danse, and the Little Luna amusement area (where the car park is now) on the Triangle Site. Today's challenge is to make sure leases for the next 50 years produce equally appropriate commercial uses.
The Esplanade Alliance does not support any shopping complex on the foreshore. Any retail proposed for this site should be an adjunct to the St.Kilda entertainment experience. It would be a wasted opportunity if The Triangle Site was turned into yet another destination-shopping precinct.
The Esplanade Alliance strongly supports accessible and diverse live music as an essential part of any development of the Triangle Site, but recognises that the existing Palace Nightclub is not essential to that continuance. However, a new live music venue of comparable capacity and suited to the nurturing of new talent must be a condition of the winning tender.
