An on site demonstration of the internet and the World Wide Web is conducted, using an off-line browser, where the people are located. This could be the local bowls club, bingo hall, community centre etc. 

It is here that people, if they choose, are directed towards either Intro to PC or to Intro to the WWW. This decision is based on a persons expressed level of computer skills and the facilitators own judgement. It is difficult to identify these skills without doing a formal test. However,  the facilitator focusses on pointing out and verbalising very clearly the required skills as the demo is being done. People are actively involved in this process are hopefully more aware of what skills are required and thus more aware of their own gap in skills. 

Aim: 

• Introduce and demystify the internet and www
• Promote opportunities and available training
• Enable informed choice

• Reduce the level of anxiety towards the www
• Appreciate the www in context of society today

• It is important to realise that this approach is used where the site with computers does not have access to the WWW. 

Aim 

• Develop the basic PC skills to surf
• Reduce the level of techno-anxiety

• Understand the concept and uses of a PC
• Be able to identify and correctly use keys on the keyboard
• Be able to operate a mouse
• Identify parts of the desktop

• navigate within the environment and initiate a nominated application, bringing up the application’s start-up page/screen
• open, close and resize nominated application windows using a mouse
• use the scroll bar function to navigate up and down an application’s window using a mouse
• navigate the toolbar and open drop down windows and initiate a nominated function using a mouse
• demonstrate highlighting of nominated text within an application using a mouse

 
 

• Prerequisite is Intro to PCs.

Aim: 

• Enable people to start surfing the WWW
• Give people confidence to go it alone: self-paced

• Understand the key concepts required to surf the WWW
• Be able to enter and operate a web browser
• Be able to manage their own learning through use of a self-paced workbook

• recognise and define the concept of browser
• demonstrate searching the Internet for information using a Netscape browser
• demonstrate navigating and scrolling across the web pages and sites, returning home when asked to, using a Netscape browser

This is where people are off doing it themselves: self-paced. They will interact with the GreyNet web site (Elwood On-line) and their workbook. The web site contains refresher activities, highlighting of key concepts and links for activitie from the workbook. 

The process for this is: 

• Learners will make a booking for access to the web at the local library or friends place for example. This will encouraged in the intro to Net course.
• They will read the workbook and refresh their knowledge, hopefully, before determining where they will begin and what they want to do
• They will then start the activities in the workbook. The first being to gain access with the following two focussed on refreshing the skills covered in the face-2-face session.

 

1. Accessing the web and logging on to the GreyNet home page 
2. Refresher on links 
3. Refresher on back & forwards 
4. Exploring the www 
Has several sites that are local and familiar: the Age newspaper: give contrast to info on line and enable practicing of skills.
5. Exploring sites in more depth 
There are a series of questions where learners are expected to start using the www to find things. This will exercise their use of the basic skills and also introduce them to the variety of structures in the www and how information is presented.
6. Search engines 
Enable more complex tasks to be done.

A time where the group gets together to share experiences, discuss issues, answer questions posed in the workbook and see where to go to next. This is where GreyNet the project is discussed and the community development aspects of the project emphasised. 

Aim: 

• enable sharing of experiences
• provide feedback on learning 
• begin to build a community (GreyNet)

• none in particular, other than feedback & participation in life-long learning

• Introduce session and its purpose
• discuss experiences to date
• walk through the workbook and activities and discuss as you go
• demonstrate the activities using either the local harddrive version of the site or if possible the live version
• discuss questions asked from workbook and answers got: compare and discuss
• discuss issues such as problems, access, barriers etc.
• state what’s next: ongoing community development aspect
