IEAust Engineering Heritage Branch invites you to a presentation entitled:

A History of Yallourn A-E Power Stations

Speaker: Julia Lamborn
Date and Time:   Thursday, 9 November 2000 at 5.30 for 6.00 pm.

The Annual General Meeting of the Heritage Branch will take place before the talk commences.

Yallourn Power Station, in the Latrobe Valley, served Victoria from 1921 to 1989. The complex grew along with Victoria, improving the quality of life of the State's citizens at home and in industry and business.

In 1994, the Victorian Government added the Power Station to its Register of Historic Buildings due to its historic, scientific and engineering significance. Generation Victoria then applied to have the complex demolished due to the hazardous nature of the site. The Victorian Heritage Council (then the Historic Buildings Council) agreed but under stringent conditions.

The speaker, during her time as a member of the Historic buildings Council, was a member of the permits/registration committee which dealt with the Yallourn Power station and she chaired the committee set up to oversee the demolition permit for the Station. One of the permit requirements was the production of videos about the history of Yallourn and the demolition. Sections of these videos will be shown during the presentation and Julia will discuss issues of preservation versus demolition.

Julia Lamborn is a lecturer at Swinburne University of Technology and a past employee of the SECV. She represented the engineering profession on the Historic Buildings Council/Heritage Council from 1985 to 1999. She chairs the Historic Mines Advisory Committee and is a member of Plannning Panels, Victoria and of Victoria Division's committees for Engineering Heritage and Environmental Engineering.
