A Guided Tour of the Rubicon Hydro Scheme

Date and Time:    Sunday, 25th February, commencing at 10am at Rubicon.

The Rubicon Hydro Scheme is located on the Rubicon and Royston Rivers, north east of Melbourne, 40 km south-west of Alexandra. The Scheme was established in 1920's and, at the time, was a significant contributor to Victoria's electricy supply network, with three run-of-river dams, four power stations and associated raceways and penstocks. It continues to operate under the managment of Southern Hydro. The Scheme is classified by the National Trust, is on the Victorian Heritage Register, and the Register of the National Estate.

Format: Assemble at Rubicon at 10.30am for a briefing on the Rubicon Scheme and its heritage significance, followed by a guided tour of some features of the scheme by Southern Hydro personnel. The assembly point and starting time will be confirmed when you register. The tour should finish mid afternoon. Rubicon is about two hours drive from Melbourne, up the Maroondah Highway to Taggerty, then NE along the Taggerty-Thornton Road towards Thornton. Turn SE onto Rubicon Road and follow to Rubicon. Before commencing the tour it may be necessary to share transport to rationalise the number of vehicles participating.
