IEAust Engineering Heritage Branch invites you to a presentation entitled:

George Gordon and the Stony Creek Dam, Geelong

Speaker: Dr.Brian Harper
Date and Time:   19 April 2001 at 5.30 for 6.00 pm.

George Gordon, the first specialist in hydraulic engineering employed in Victoria, designed a masonry gravity dam for the Geelong water supply shortly after his arrival in the Colony. Dr. Harper will review the conditions in Victoria that brought about Gordon's appointment, the state of knowledge of masonry dam design at that time, Gordon's background, and the influences that led him to his design for the dam at Stony Creek.

Dr. Brian Harper is a graduate in civil engineering from Sydney University and completed post graduate studies in transport and traffic engineering in Canada. He worked in road and traffic engineering and town planning and was Chief Executive Officer of Doncaster and Templestowe City Council. Since retiring he has completed a Ph.D. with the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at Melbourne University. He has a long standing interest in engineering history and heritage and is a Member of Victoria Division's Engineering Heritage Committee.
