Professor Buchanan is prominent in the field of Industrial Archaelogy and is a Past President of the Newcomem Society, a member of the Council for British Archaeology and of the National Trust.

He is a Royal Commissioner on Historical Monuments in England and Secretary General of the International Committee for the History of Technology amongst other similar appointments. The recipient of outstanding academic qualifications and honours, Dr. Buchanan is the author of numerous papers and publications relating to Industrial Archaeology, Engineers and the History of Technology.

His visit to Australia has been largely sponsored by the Hydro-Electric Commission of Tasmania as the keynote speaker at the 6th National Conference on Engineering Heritage in Hobart 5-7 October 1992
