THE VALUE OF ENGINEERING HERITAGE

Ken McInnes MIEAust MACS

Often the key roles that engineers and engineering have played in the development of our society have been overlooked. In addition, the physical evidence of our engineering and industrial past is often difficult to see, or is easily misunderstood.

Engineering Heritage items and records pose peculiar problems not only of identifying, recording, protecting & conserving, but also of interpretation.

Examples from Australia and overseas will be used to explain the problems and threats, some of the opportuties that have been grasped and some of the solutions that have been found.

The Engineering Heritage Programmes of the IEAust. are seen as a means of promoting a wider awareness and understanding of the role of engineering, as well as bringing deserved public recognition to historic works and sites.

Ken will descibe some of the programmes and outline the forms of local participation in them.
