Neil Cossons draws on his wide ranging experience of over 25 years in the museum and conservation business, to examine the policies, options, opportunities and problems facing those interested in retaining an industrial and engineering heritage as part of the cultural landscape. Interest in industrial archaeology has grown rapidly in the last twenty years in response to the threats - real and perceived - to the remains of industrial activity.
So too has an active preservation movement.
But industrial sites and monuments pose peculiar problems not only of preservation but of interpretation too.
Examples from all over the world are used to illustrate the nature of these dilemmas and some of the answers that have been found.
