Dr. Lay will speak on the history of Australian Roads from Aboriginal times to the First World War. Given a talk of his earlier this year to the Royal Society of Victoria on road development up to 1850, this talk will place less emphasis on that period and more on the period between 1850 to 1920. A special emphasis will be given to interactions with administrative structures, with the railways, bicycles and the newly developed motor car. The early history of cars in Australia will be discussed in some details and lead up to the times covered by Dr. Lazarus' talk to the group last year.
