Mr. Alsop will describe the early history (1917-1932) of the Great Ocean Road which was built by a private Trust formed mainly of Geelong business men, with technical guidance being given by the newly formed Country Roads Board (1913).
The route along the Otway littoral, was difficult to survey and, in an age lacking powered earth moving machinery, difficult to build. It did provide 3,000 ex service men from the First World War with jobs, and opened up easier communications for the settlements along the coast between Anglesea and Apollo Bay.
The talk will be illustrated by slides.
