The Subject:
This talk is about an early Colonial Engineer, Captain (later Major General Sir) Peter Scratchley (1835-1885) of the Royal Engineers. It will examine what is known of his early career as an Engineer and his later influence on the defence schemes of the Australian colonies. The talk will be illustrated by photos, diagrams and maps.

The Speaker:
Michael O'Brien graduated from Duntroon in 1968 and was allocated to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He served as a platoon commander and intelligence officer of 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment in Vietnam from 1970-71 and later wrote a history of that battalion. His military specialisations included acquisition and logistics. He commanded the Army Technology and Engineering Agency and before he retired in 2002, was the Army's Support Commander. He has extensive board experience in credit unions, runs an antiquarian bookshop and lectures on cruise ships. He is responsible to the Chief of Army for the re-burial in October this year of five Australians killed in the Third Battle of Ypres (1917).
