The Subject:
The Victorian Government called for proposals for supplying Castlemaine and Sandhurst (Bendigo) with water for sluicing alluvial gold. The scheme selected, that of an engineer Joseph Brady, proposed damming the Coliban River at Malmsbury and constructing an aqueduct to carry water to the two places. The paper examines the state of knowledge on rainfall, run-off and stream flow at the time, and Brady's approach to forecasting yield. It then covers the machinations around the scheme, its problems, and its impact on the establishment of hydrological studies in Victoria.
The Speaker:
Dr Brian Harper, a civil engineer, is a Fellow in the School of Social and Environmental Enquiry, University of Melbourne, where he is pursuing his interest in the history of civil engineering looking at 19th century developments in engineering practice.
