The Subject:
From 1878 until 1926, the township of Waratah (now Walkerville South), on the western shores of Waratah Bay in South Gippsland, was the location of a significant limestone quarry and lime production industry involving 6 kilns and employing up to 80 men.
The lime produced at Walkerville was mainly shipped to Melbourne but some went to Gippsland and occasionally to Sydney. Lime from Waratah is said to have been used in the preparation of mortar for the Flinders Street Station.
The paper will draw on geological, pubic and private information relating to this fascinating heritage site to develop an engineering approach to the operation and its relevance to early Victoria.
The Speaker:
Don Bartlett, is a civil and environmental engineer with some expertise in mining, quarrying, planning and disaster management. He has been in private practice for the past 25 years and is presently the chairman of Engineering Heritage Victoria.
