The Subject:
The establishment of the railway to Bendigo involved the construction of a number of bridges using wrought iron girders. Under the policy of the Government of the day, these were designed in Melbourne, by engineers recruited in the Colony, without the assistance of British consultants.
These early bridges are admired as part of our engineering heritage, but the question of how they were designed, given the state of structural knowledge at the time, is seldom considered.
The paper examines two of these bridges, the Saltwater River Bridge over the Maribyrnong, designed in 1856, and the Tarradale Viaduct over Back Creek, designed in 1858-59, to assess how the engineers in the colony sized the girders.
The Speakers:
Brian Harper, civil engineer, is a Fellow in the History and Philosophy of Science Department, University of Melbourne, where he is pursuing his interest in the history of civil engineering looking at 19th century developments in engineering practice.
Vic Moll, civil engineer, spent his early working life as a railway engineer with the Victorian Railways and British Rail.
