| Speaker: | John McCutchan |
|---|---|
| Place: | Auditorium, Engineering House,
21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne |
| Time: | 5.30 for 6.00 pm. |
The Subject:
The Cassilis Gold Mining Company, faced with an increasing bill for firewood, converted to electric drives in 1908. To provide the power, the Company established a hydro-electric plant on the Victoria River, 25 kilometres away from the mine.
The talk will be illustrated using a large number of photographs taken over a period of nearly 30 years of research into this pioneer installation, and its untimely, but understandable, demise.
The Speaker:
John McCutchan is an electrical engineer with a deep admiration for the efforts and achievements of pioneer engineers and tradesmen in devising appropriate technology to suit local conditions, particularly on the remote goldfields of Victoria.
During 31 years lecturing at Melbourne University, he maintained a lookout for surviving relics and records of such achievements. At various times he has assisted the Museum of Victoria, the National Trust Industrial History Committee, Engineering Heritage Victoria and Sovereign Hill.
