The Warrnambool Breakwater

Thursday, 1 September 2005

Speaker: Richard Honess
Place:   Auditorium, Engineering House,
21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne
Time:   5.30 for 6.00 pm.

The talk will examine the 315 metre long Breakwater Pier at Warrnambool, complete with its broad gauge railway line, that was built to the design of the eminent 19th century British engineer of ports and harbours, Sir John Coode.

It is much loved by the residents and has become an icon of Warrnambool. When completed in 1890 it was one of Victoria's most substantial structures. Built at a cost of £156,000, it has withstood the ravages of time and the fiercest of storms for more than 115 years.

The talk will cover the story behind its establishment, as well as how it was constructed, and its controversial history in the subsequent period.

The Speaker:
Richard Honess is a mechanical engineer who has spent most of his working life at Caterpillar of Australia Ltd. His family come from Warrnambool, and hence his interest in the Breakwater.
