The talk will cover the history of the Thompson family's activities in Castlemaine, where in 1875 they founded the engineering business Thompson and Company. This enterprise lasted until 1925, when the last member of the Thomson family left, and new owners took over.
The works, now operated by Thompsons, Kelly and Lewis Pty Ltd, continue in production, however the talk will focus on activities up to 1925.
The Speaker:
Mike Williams, is a former mechanical and marine engineer who acquired his basic training in the British iron and steel industry in the north east of England. His later experience includes operation of refrigerated steam and diesel propelled merchant ships, and construction and repair of naval ships in Australia. He was the Royal Australia navy mechanical engineering liaison officer with the British Defence procurement Executive at Bath in the UK in the early 1970's, and has been a member of the Institution since 1965, and earlier still in the UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers
Since retirement, some sixteen years ago, he has been recycling himself as an historian - a work still in progress.
