Stone Production in Victoria

Thursday, 23rd June 2005

Speaker: John Mitas
Place:   Rooms A & B, Engineering House,
21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne
Time:   5.30 for 6.00 pm.

Quarrying operations in Victoria have grown substantially as the State has developed. Production now amounts to about 37 million tonnes each year, comprising 12.5 million tonnes of aggregate, 12.7 million tonnes of crushed rock, and 11.8 million tonnes of sand, clay, limestone, and other products.

The talk will examine the changes that have occurred in quarrying over the years leading to the development of modern operational techniques and in particular rehabilitation concepts.

The Speaker:
John Mitas is the Manager of Mining and Extractive Operations in the Department of Primary Industries, Victoria. He is a civil and mining engineer, with post-graduate training in business administration and occupational hazard management.

John has had close to thirty years experience in the resource industry in both the private and government sectors. He worked underground, and managed quarry operations, before joining the Department, where he has been involved in a number of regulatory roles.
