In the 19th century academic training was seen by many as being of little use to those interested in becoming engineers. The desirable engineering education was seen to be by way of serving as a pupil, in the office of a practicing engineer, or in an engineering works. Many held there were no real advantages, and many disadvantages, in University education for engineers.
In this talk Dr Rasmussen will examine the careers of some of the earliest holders of the Certificate of Engineering from the University of Melbourne, and their contribution to the development of engineering and the State.
