From an Idea in a Paddock --
THE STORY OF SUNSHINE HARVESTERS

Thursday, 19th August 2004

Speaker: Jim Shaw
Place:   Auditorium, Ground Floor, Engineering House,
21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne
Time:   5.30 for 6.00 pm.

The development of a practical harvester on his farm was turned, through the acumen of H V McKay, into the commercial success of Sunshine Harvesters. McKay's company developed into a major manufacturing enterprise that exported to the world. This enterprise introduced new production methods to Australia and changes in labour relations that had a lasting impact on the social fabric of our society.

The talk will trace the history of the Company and outline something of the impact it wrought on manufacturing industry here, and on Australian society.

The Speaker:
Jim Shaw is the great-grandson of H V McKay. He is a structural engineer who, after some years in practise, has turned to the law, and now works full time as a lawyer. With this background, he is well placed to speak on the engineering and social impact of the Sunshine Harvester operation.
