Built between 1894 and 1897, the Spotswood Pumping Station was once the heart of Melbourne's sewerage system handling the bulk of the city's daily wastewater flows until 1964. In 1989, Museum Victoria acquired the former pumping station site to be redeveloped into its Scienceworks campus. Today the former pumping station is recognised as one of Australia's most significant industrial heritage sites, encompassing much more than just a collection of grand historic buildings.
Matthew Churchward, Senior Curator Engineering & Transport with Museum Victoria will lead a tour of the former Pumping Station, including an opportunity to see one of the mighty triple-expansion steam engines running (on air) and a rare chance to explore the 'bowels' of the Pumping Station - or underground tunnels and galleries not usually open to the public.
After the tour an illustrated talk will be presented giving an insight into other aspects of this unique site including the collection of over 1,500 artefacts, documents, photographs and oral histories, and exploring some of the engineering lessons that can be learnt from re-examining the site's history.
