EVALUATING HISTORIC CONCRETE BUILDINGS

Thursday, 15th April 2004

Speaker: David Beauchamp
Consulting Heritage and Forensic Engineer
Place:   Auditorium, Ground Floor, Engineering House,
21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne
Time:   5.30 for 6.00 pm.

The continuation in use of older concrete buildings, particularly those that introduced new design systems in reinforced concrete, require an evaluation to be made of their load carrying capacity. The talk will examine the issues involved in assessment, and the steps necessary to evaluate such buildings.

The 1908-09 Sniders & Abrahams Building, in Drewery Lane, Melbourne, a very early reinforced concrete building, the first in Australia to use the patented Turner Mushroom System for flat slab floors, will be used as an illustration. The history of the building, and information about the Turner Mushroom System, the first practical flat slab system, will also be covered.

The Speaker:
David Beauchamp practised as a consulting structural engineer for 30 years before selling his practice to become a heritage and forensic engineer. He has had a long-term interest in historic buildings and has designed the remedial structural work for many such buildings including the dome of the Exhibition Building, the stonework of Parliament House and Days Mill. He has also prepared conservation management plans for a number of historic bridges.

David was formerly a member of the Heritage Council of Victoria and is on the EHA(Vic) committee. He has written a number of papers on brickwork, stonework and lime mortar and presented several papers at Engineering Heritage conferences on a variety of topics.
