Fifty acres of land at Batman's Hill was granted to the Melbourne Mount Alexander and Murray River Railway Company for a central terminus. However as the Company proved unable to raise the money to build its lines, the Victorian Government purchased the Company's assets. The Batman's Hill land was occupied by the Victorian Government Railways and became the base for the greater part of the Victorian rail system.
The talk will trace the early history of the railway development, the changing development of infrastructure, and the long time stagnation of Spencer Street Station up to its current transformation into Southern Cross Station.
The Speaker:
Sid Brown is a retired Chemist/Biochemist who as a hobby has had a long-term interest in Victorian Rail. He is a member of the Australian Railways Historical Society (Victorian Division), for many years serving on the Editorial Committee of the monthly magazine NEWSRAIL and has been the author of many articles for that magazine.
