Victoria's first substantial reinforced concrete bridge was built over the diverted
course of the Yarra River in 1899. Credit for its design and construction
came to be widely attributed to Sir John Monash. The archives of the Monash
& Anderson partnership and the Victorian Public Works Department provide a different and more
complex picture. The talk will commence with a brief description of the
Monier arch bridge system and its introduction to Australia and Victoria. It
will then focus on the conception and design of the Morell Bridge,
introducing the engineers who participated. The talk will conclude with an
analysis of what we know and can deduce about their respective
contributions.
The speaker Alan Holgate, graduated from University College London in 1958.
After working for the NSW Department of Main Roads and the Snowy Mountains
Hydro-Electric Authority he joined Monash University in 1966. He taught
analysis and design of structures for 30 years, taking early retirement in
1996. His main research interest was the "art" of structural design,
particularly the interaction of structural engineers and architects. Since
retiring he has continued a project initiated by his colleague Geoff Taplin:
Research and analysis of the engineering work of Sir John Monash prior to
World War 1.
