The National Trust, with funding from Vic Roads and Heritage Victoria, engaged Biosis Research and Ken McInnes to develop a methodology for assessing the heritage significance of the some 2000 road bridges within Victoria in which metal is used for the primary load bearing components, and to test this on a small sample of bridges. The study was guided by a steering committee of engineers who developed the brief and liaised with the consultants during the study.

Gary Vines will outline the study which provides a thematic framework - based on a chronological history, technological development, economic and political structures and the role of key individuals including designers, engineers and manufacturers - and assessment methodology.

George Deutsch will elaborate on the basis of the quantitative criteria for assessment of significance developed in the study.
