February Meeting

The Life of the Bridge Inspecting Engineer
    - Victorian Railways early 1950's

Date:   Thursday 28 February
Time:   5.30 for 6.00 pm.
Location:   Rooms A & B, Ground Floor, IEAust Victorian Division Headquarters,
21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne
Speaker: Vic Moll

Vic Moll spent his early working life as a railway engineer with the Victorian Railways and with British Rail. In the early 1950's he spent some time as a Bridge Inspecting Engineer in the Western District. The Victorian railway system was in those years very extensive. It involved a multitude of structures, from the humble bed log of a level crossing to multi span viaducts over flood-ways and rivers. Timber was the main structural material in use, and with its vulnerability to dry rot, splitting and termite attack required regular inspection. Vic will give an account of the work involved and of the techniques used in inspection and maintenance, and of the many skills now lost as the structures on the remaining lines have been replaced in more permanent materials requiring little maintenance.
