The Melbourne tramway operators adopted overseas designs for their cars when the electric system started. This talk reviews the rolling stock adopted, and examines the nature of the cars, and the origins of their design. It traces the gradual development in local design and manufacture from the start of operation until the beginning of construction of the first 'W' class tram in 1927.
The speaker, Michael Norbury, a Solicitor by profession, has, as a leisure interest, carried out extensive research into the history of the Melbourne tramway system. His talk will be accompanied by numerous illustrations of local and overseas cars.
