PERSÉE -  TRAGÉDIE LYRIQUE,
By Jean-Baptise LULLY
This work was shown and played at the Early Music Studio, University of Melbourne
27 Royal Parade, Parkville. Friday 2nd March

This was a really wonderful experience - seeing a superb Canadian production on DVD  of this Opera  with beautiful authentic styled costumes,  great sets/scenery with excellent sound and music.
After we  saw the complete opera there was a performance of some of this music on viols which was inspired by the DVD despite the hot night.

WONDERFUL MUSIC!
Many thanks to Lyn and Peter!

The previous concert in April was a great success, and we hope that members and friends will be out in force to support this concert.

Plucked Strings Continuo Workshop
Conducted by Rosemary Hodgson, July 2003

We had a large turn out of players, singers and listeners to explore the art of continuo accompaniment to vocal music of the 17th century. The workshop was conducted by well-known Melbourne lutenist, Rosemary Hodgson. Soprano, Sue Baker, was our vocal soloist for the focal piece of the workshop, Caccini's famous song from his "Le Nuove musiche" (1601), Amarilli mia bella. This piece was selected as it is also available in a contemporary "arrangement" for lute accompaniment in Robert Dowland's " A Musical Banquet". It gave us insight into how a lute would realise a figured bass, and helped explore the difference between the lute and the eclipsing theorbo practices of the time.
