PERSÉE - TRAGÉDIE LYRIQUE,
By Jean-Baptise LULLY
This was shown at the Early Music Studio, University of Melbourne
27 Royal Parade, Parkville. Friday 2nd March
This was a really wonderful experience - seeing a superb Canadian production
on DVD of this Opera with beautiful authentic styled costumes,
great sets/scenery with excellent sound and music.
After we saw the complete opera there was a performance of some
of this music on viols which was inspired by the DVD despite the hot night.
WONDERFUL MUSIC!
Many thanks to Lyn and Peter!
A talk by Dr Patricia Duke on "The Foundations of Early Music
in Melbourne".
Friday October 20th at 8.00 p.m.
at The Early Music Studio, Faculty of Music,
27 Royal Pde, Parkville (opposite the University of Melbourne main
Faculty of Music buildings).
Entry: free - members of the public are welcome.
The talk will have an emphasis on the "pioneers" who preceded the resurgence
of interest in the 1970's and beyond. Foremost of these pioneers were people
like Bach Festival director, Leonard Fullard and harpsichordist, Mancell
Kirby and Louise Dyer, founder of the Lyre Bird Press. Others included
Frank Higgins, Fred Morgan and Harold Badger.
Patricia Duke completed her PhD at Melbourne University Faculty of
Music on this subject, and her thesis singles out the contribution of Leonard
Fullard, however she has included detailed research on the broader field
in Melbourne since the early 1920's and we look forward to hearing her
talk about the foundations on which the present Early Music Society as
well as the Recorder Guild and the Early Music Studio of Melbourne University
are to some degree based.
This EMSV Meeting will be held fittingly at the Early Music Studio of
Melbourne University on Friday evening, 20th October starting at 8pm. The
usual high standard of supper will be on offer.
the EMSV welcomes non-members to this talk.
