Cubbin Family -
Ms Wendy Hicks (1082)
Contrary to family beliefs my great great grandparents James & Jane CUBBIN come to
Australia in the 1880's. It was thought that their son Alexander (my great grandfather)
was the first to come here. Recently I found that James came to N.S.W in approximately
1885 while his wife and son Jane & William migrated to Melbourne in May 1889 on the
Oroya.
James was employed as a Sail maker, in Whitehaven, (where he was born), Liverpool and
it was stated on his death certificate as being a sail maker in Melbourne.
His wife Jane (nee KNIGHT) was bom near Whitehaven, married in March
1861, a daughter Elizabeth was christened the day after her parents and 2 sons Robert and
Alexander were also bom in Whitehaven. A few years later they moved to Liverpool,
where 2 more sons John James & William were bom. By the 1871 Census Elizabeth had
died.
I don't know when Robert came out but he purchased his parents plot when his mother
died in 1909. Jane and James (died 1915 Clifton Hill) are buried in unmarked graves at the
Williamstown Cemetery.
Robert worked on the Railways and lived in Traralgon in the 1890's.
William's son William played for St Kilda and Victoria. According to the Centenary of
Victorian Football, there is a William or Bill CUBBINS playing for St Kilda in 1915, playing and coach for Footscray around 1934.
If anyone has information on the families of William & Robert & of William's playing or
coaching football career.
Alexander came to Australia approx. 1915.
Most of Alexander's family came out in 1920 and have lived in the Clifton Hill area for
many years.
Alexander returned to Liverpool in 1930 and died in 1931.
