TOWNSEND, Fitzpatrick (27 Oct 2002)
Information is sought on the ancestors of Alfred TOWNSEND prior to 1825. Who were his parents and siblings? Aged 22, Alfred left Coat Oxon, Oxfordshire, England as an assisted passenger from Plymouth, England, on the "Mohomed Shar" on the 29/3/1848. A little over three months later, 5/7/1848, he arrived at Port Phillip, Australia. Alfred's disposal list stated that he was employed by Gilbert ROBERTSON at Lake Colac, Victoria, Australia. He was a labourer cattle driver. He was able to read but unable to read.
Eliza FITZPATRICK came from Kilkenny, Ireland with Port Phillip Orphans on the ship "Eliza Caroline", arriving on the 31/3/1850, moving on from Melbourne to Geelong on the 1/5/1850. She was 18 years of age and worked for a Mrs BAKER of Great Bourke St. (Where?) She earned £9 for 3 months work. Who were her her parents and siblings? Did any of them survive the famine?
Eliza married Alfred TOWNSEND, on the 18/10/1851 at St Mary's Angels of God Catholic Church, Geelong. Alfred and Eliza's first born was William, 1852 Colac Victoria, m 1. Sarah Annn FISHER, 1875 Modewarre, Victoria. m 2. Emily WILSON, 1879 Bendigo, Victoria. William died 22/8/1925 at Durham Ox, Victoria. Second born Jane, 1854 Geelong, m 1. Alfred 4/12/1870 Modewarre, d 11/9/1880 Durham Ox.
Modewarre is a little settlement near Geelong, Victora. About 1871 land in the Mologa area of Victoria was surveyed for settlers into 300 acre blocks on payment of survey feesand the promise of freehold title as the farm improved. Alfred obtained one of these blocks, building a mud brick house and sheds. He called the farm Tremaine, or Treirmaine Villa. Could this be an area or propert name that Alfred or Eliza came from?
When Alfred died, he owned 1225 acres, crops, sheep and horses. His land was left to his sons, house and money to his wife and money to his daughters. Alfred died 22/10/1903 aged 80, and Eliza died 7/5/1904 aged 73. Both are buried in the Durham Ox cemetery.
Alfred and Eliza TOWNSEND were my great great grandparents. Any information regarding Alfred and Eliza's descendents would be appreciated.
