Your Excellency,
Ghazi Suleiman, Mohammed Alhafiz, and Min-Allah Eissa
I am writing to you as a member of Amnesty International to express my
concern at the treatment of Ghazi Suleiman, Mohammed Alhafiz, and
Min-Allah Eissa.
Ghazi Suleiman, a human rights activist, is being held in incommunicado
detention at an unknown location following his arrest in the capital
Khartoum, and is at risk of torture or ill-treatment. He is Chair of the
Sudan Human Rights Group and a leader of the political party National
Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (NARD). He was arrested on 2
July by national security force officers. His family were informed he
would be held in Kober Prison but there has been no information on his
whereabouts since then. Fears for his health have been heightened by his
need to take medication for diabetes and his heart condition. His arrest
appears to be directly linked to the “Khartoum Declaration drawn up by
political activists and civil society representatives, in support of the
“Cairo Declaration” of 24 May 2003 relating to the peace process.
Amnesty International considers him to be a prisoner of conscience.
Mohammed Alhafiz, lawyer and Vice-Chair of the Sudan Human Rights Group,
and Min-Allah Eissa, a Trade Union leader, were arrested on 3 July 2003
and taken to the political section of the national security forces
office in Khartoum. They are two of the Declaration's signatories. Their
refusal to report daily to the offices of the National Security Forces
will possibly result in their re-arrest and the risk of torture or
ill-treatment whilst in detention.
I urge you to use your offices to intervene in the incommunicado
detention of Ghazi Suleiman and use your authority to give him immediate
and unrestricted access to his family, legal counsel and any medical aid
he may need and to give assurances that he will not be tortured or
ill-treated. I would also urge you to have him released immediately and
unconditionally as he is being held solely for the peaceful expression
of his opinions.
I also call upon you to use your good offices to arrange for a stop
harassing and detaining members of Sudanese civil society, including
Mohammed Alhafiz and Min-Allah Eissa, solely for the peaceful expression
of their opinions.
Yours sincerely,
