General Information for Parents

Additional Needs
If your child has any special requirements, please discuss these with your teacher prior to commencement of kindergarten. These may include allergies, toilet training concerns and fears/phobias.

Behaviour Management
We believe in encouraging positive behaviour and ensuring that all children are respected and valued as individuals.  Setting limits for behaviour is important for the safety and protection of children and staff, ultimately leading to the development of children’s self-discipline.  We aim to help children learn the consequences of their behaviour and thus develop an understanding of how their actions affect others.

Orientation & Settling In
During term one you will attend an initial orientation session with your child. Children are divided into smaller groups for a short time to allow them to adapt quickly and happily. Your child will then attend independently as directed in the orientation timetable.  The orientation program helps the teaching staff to get to know the new children and assist them in adapting to their new environment. Parents are requested not to stay after the initial orientation session.  Some children experience separation anxiety. Please be assured that this will be managed in a sensitive way by the teaching staff. Your prompt and confident departure will assist in this process.  Please call after 15 minutes if you are concerned.  We will of course ring you if we are unable to settle your child after an extended period of time.

Toilet Independence
It is highly recommended that children be toilet trained before they begin Pre-School.  However, children who are not yet fully toilet trained may attend.Independence can be developed/fostered in the following ways:-

  1. Use of toilet paper
  2. Turning taps on and off
  3. Telling the teacher/assistant if they have had an accident

We suggest when attending an orientation session, to show your child the children’s toilets so that they are familiar with their location and appearance as they may be different what your child is used to.

Toileting Accidents
If your child still experiences frequent accidents, we suggest they attend Pre-School in pull-ups.   Occasional toileting accidents are able to be dealt with promptly by the staff. However, if your child has an on-going toileting issue and requires frequent changes, staff may need to consult with a parent to negotiate a management strategy.
