While the urban foreshore has been largely shaped by and controlled by engineering methods, West Beach St Kilda is Wild! Some how it remains untamed, and constantly changing in response to the weather, the wind and the waves. The area has actually grown as a result of the construction of the offshore breakwater and the altered sea-currents now deposit sand from both the north and south. From this (left) in 1989 to this (below) into 2000 |

| As the shoreline shifted, new expanses of sand were colonised by local native plants and a host of weed species. Since 1989 the area has gradually been developed by local residents and the Council. Explore West Beach and uncover some unexpected treasures - a series of Koori artworks beside the paths. Look at the plant - rich colours and textures born of the ancient landscaoe of the region - sand dune, saltmarsh and wetland communities. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
