Measurement of Sea Temperature, Salinity and Conductivity

Fish breeding, Northern Pacific sea star invasions and Japanese kelp growth are all temperature and salinity dependent. These three key events are closely related to our research on the penguin community, rakali observations and sea grass monitoring.
In July 2003 Earthcare St Kilda purchased handheld, conductivity -salinity-temperature instrumentation. Observations are made from the junction of St Kilda Pier and St Kilda Breakwater and measurements are taken at a depth of 1 metre and 2 metres once a week around 9am.
The following graph shows measurements taken from August 2003 to April 2004. The sudden drops in measurements occur at the times of heavy rainfall.
The most recent drop in temperature due to cooler weather has heralded the return of the Northern Pacific Sea star.
Earthcare expects to continue taking these measurements for many years and will note the patterns of biological and botanical change associated with these readings.
