Earthcare Planning Part Two

Thursday 25 March 7.30pm

When we met in February, we tried to identify the heart of Earthcare St Kilda..

This was done by naming our varied reasons for being involved, and our hopes for change.

It is clear that there are differences and tensions (as would be expected in any healthy organisation).

It seems to be a question of emphasis and degree more than anything else.

Next Thursday I'm going to ask everyone to identify goals, and activities they wish

to achieve in the following areas:

a) Care for the enviroment

b) Human settlement/impact/activity

c) Communication/education/awareness-raising

d) Organisational needs/activities

These were the areas that were seen to be at the core of the member’s desires for Earthcare St Kilda..

We will also name our priorities for the coming year. If we have time, we will talk about accountability and review.

I will suggest that we divide into small groups to do much of this work.

REVEGETATION OF ST KILDA BREAKWATER

Paul and Melanie have been visiting local primary schools where they have helped the children to propagate Noon Flower cuttings.

Each child has taken home a milk carton containing a carefully planted cutting. These, we hope will be cared for, and the children will come out to the breakwater during Earthcare Week to plant their cutting and some other tube stock.

It would be great to see the members of Earthcare participating in this event. Bring your milk cartons with holes in the bottom and containing some earth, to the next meeting and come to the breakwater on World Environment Day ( Saturday 5th June) for a major revegetation day.

We will have some very happy penguins come nesting season.

ST KILDA BREAKWATER underwater research

Some intrepid Earthcare members have completed their first dive. They discovered that the breakwater habitat is very healthy with an abundance of small wild life, including seahorses. These dives will continue for at least 12 months.

A ground crew is needed urgently please ring Zoe on 9534 6981.

BIKE RIDE

How about a ride around The City of Port Phillip indigenous sites with other Earthcare bicycle owners? More information soon but if you are keen to participate let us know on 05 008 32784

Recycling "Swap-Meets"

All of us hoard things we don't need and no longer use. All of us need or

could productively use things we don't have, but which are sitting unused

in other people's garages, spare rooms and sheds. Why don't we start

regular "swap meets" for Earthcare members? Re-using existing things,

instead of buying and causing the production of unnecessary new items, is

an important part of looking after our planet.

Details of how, where and at what intervals we should conduct these events

are yet to be decided.

If you have any ideas or useful previous experience, please contact the

committee on 05 008 32784

In the meantime, dig out the clothes that you'll never be thin enough to

wear again, old children's and baby clothes and equipment, fabric remnants,

books, household equipment, plants that have over-propagated,

anything........
