Last Opportunity to put plants in the ground this year

St Kilda Breakwater

Sunday 20th September

11am

Recycled seaweed sand and compost has been spread on the renovated breakwater and the noon flowers we planted in August are thriving. The penguins are enjoying the comfort of making burrows in rocks surrounded by soil and are lining their nests with sprigs of noon flower. On Sunday 20th we intend planting a variety of species and hope to establish a unique plant colony.

Sea Birds

Presented by David Eades

7.30pm Thursday 24th September

"The House"corner Blessington/Herbert Sts. St Kilda

Many slides and a wealth of information about habitat accompanied David’s last presentation of St Kilda bird life. We look forward to this month’s sea bird collection.

Eucalyptus lehmanii Bushy Yates Gum

This eucalypt is now in bloom in Streets, parks and reserves throughout the City of Port Phillip. The buds are orange, the flowers bright green and the gum nuts are a very dark brown.

Rakali like chips

Last Rakali Watch we noticed some excitement among the rakali population. They were swimming around in circles collecting something off the surface of the water, then taking the spoils back to nearby rocks and eating their catch with obvious enjoyment.

One small fragment left behind was identified as a crinkle cut chip. This information could be of vital importance ….we think.

Next Rakali Watch Sunday September 13 and 27 on the St Kilda Pier Boardwalk 6.15pm to 7.30pm. BE THERE. We will provide the crinkle cut chips (for watchers only).

About Earthcare

Earthcare is a practical, local environment group. We work closely with specialists and the City council to improve the environment in the City of Port Phillip.

Our main projects are to increase the diversity and extent of native vegetation, the fortnightly penguin and rakali study groups, the annual Wild Places in the City of Port Phillip photographic, painting and informative exhibition, and studies of the St Kilda Harbour. Membership includes the monthly newsletter, admission to talks by guest speakers, access to specialist project groups, and participation in local plantings.

It’s a great way to study local ecologies, with or without formal qualifications while giving something to our community.

Would you like to discuss your ideas and interest in the environment with the committee of management?

Give us a ring on 95313840 or 95346981 and we will arrange a meeting.
