THANK
YOU TO ALISON STRACHAN by Josephine
Samuel-King
Alison Strachan has been Earthcare's secretary for the last two years and is
now being replaced by Jessica Kittson. Alison has done an amazing
Job! She is one of those people who is rarely in the spotlight but
without which Earthcare would cease to function.
Alison has diligently coordinated the committee, picked up the mail, edited and
printed the newsletters, is Earthcare's webmistress and recorded penguin
data. This had been done week after week month after month, quietly and
cheerfully.
During this time Alison has also written and illustrated the penguin booklet
and developed the Earthcare website. These have been invaluable tools
that have made Earthcare and Earthcare's work more accessible.
Fortunately Alison remains on the committee and editor of the newsletter and
website.
Thank you Alison for an outstanding Job!

The Corroboree Tree Grasslands project is to be opened
next month, May 26, at 2pm, on the site near the Oval at St Kilda
Junction. Significantly, this date
coincides with the 'Journey of Healing' (formerly Sorry Day), emphasising the
reconciliation theme of the project.
The Opening is to be held in conjunction with the Port Phillip Citizens
for Reconciliation and the St Kilda Historical Society.
After recent set backs the project is now racing
ahead, in the last few weeks old bitumen paths have been removed, new 'soft'
paths have been laid and the two Meeting places have been excavated. A
protective barrier has also been erected to shield the Tree from the frequent
crashes by cars using the Queens Road entry ramp. (There was another crash, just days after the barrier was
installed, that time with no damage to the Tree).
Stone walls are now being constructed, to be followed
closely by the aboriginal artwork. A replica of a midden will be incorporated
into one stone wall and a large mosaic depicting Bunjil, the Creator, will be
laid out on the floor of the larger of the two Meeting Places.
In the frantic few weeks left there is still much to
do - mainly planting. About 4 000
native grasses have been planted so far this Autumn with another 11 000 grasses
and trees still to go. That includes 12
more River Red Gums grown from cuttings taken from the Corroboree Tree. This means that the spirit of the Tree will
survive, even if the Tree itself should perish.
Many dates have been set aside for planting; can you
help, even for an hour or two? We
provide all the training and tools that you may need.
The dates are April 21 (Sun), April 26 (Fri),
April 28 (Sun), May 5 (Sun), May 12 (Sun), May 19 (Sun) starting at 10 am
on each day, at the project site.
