And Hear

Melissa Doherty the Volunteer Co-ordinator

From Earth Sanctuary's Little River Project

Melissa will discuss their latest project, The Little River Earth Sanctuary just north of the You Yangs. This sanctuary is about 1600 hectares, 70% of which has been cleared for grazing. The other 30% still has the tree cover, but a lot of the understory shrubs have been cleared or grazed away. Fencing is in progress at the moment and feral animals practically eradicated from the area that hasn't been cleared. It is planned to start introducing native wildlife to this area in the middle of this year, species to include Parma Wallabies, Red Bellied Pademelons, Brush Tailed Betongs, Southern Brown bandicoot, Long Nosed Potoroos, Eastern Quolls and Rufous Bettongs.

Seirei no Kai.  Bulletin no. 20010127

New Year’s Greetings from Mayor Fukushima

Objectives for the 21st Century

Shigeru Kojima, Representative

A Happy New Year to you all! I sincerely hope that this first year of the 21st century is a healthy one for all.

This year is the “International Year of the Volunteer”. In order for our activities up until now to become a model for a greater number of people it will be necessary for each and every member to try and appeal to other citizens.

“A New Way of Building a Town.” A part of which is reestablishing natural environments, and in so doing our own lives will benefit. Of late, whenever something is inconvenient for us we have a tendency to rely on the authorities rather than trying to reach a solution ourselves. Are we not contributing to the squandering of taxpayers’ money in this way? If we citizens think of what we ourselves can do and act accordingly, surely we can produce good results.

This year will be the 10th Anniversary of Seirei no Kai. Here, at the start of the 21st century, I’d like us to persevere in doing all that we can to make improvements for an environment with the potential for continuous growth.

“Groundwork Activities Promotion Manual”

Looking at the staff of Seirei no Kai, a number of activities are introduced. Edited by the National Land Agency Trust-sponsored Japan Groundwork Association. A4 size, 18 pages.

Jo-Anne Thyer will feature in Elle Magazine sometime soon.  Early morning photos taken on St Kilda beach will accompany a report on the Seagrass project.

Rakali Research Back

Earthcare is pleased to announce the return of one of its most popular projects, Rakali Watch. Unfortunately without Michelle Smith who has left Melbourne for an indefinite period due to work commitments.  Rob and Lyndsey, zoology students studying at Monash University  are applying for a grant for this project, with careful consideration of the type of research we wish to undertake. The Field Naturalist Society have also invited to assist Earthcare with Rakali Watch. For those of you just wanting to watch their behaviour come and sit on the board walk beyond the St Kilda Pier Kiosk 7.30pm Thursday 22nd March and at 7.00pm Wednesday 4th April. Bring binoculars if you have them

Please keep a look out for Rakali times in the 'What's On' section of your Earthcare newsletter.

Earthcare is a practical, local environment group. We work closely with specialists and the Council to improve the environment in the City of Port Phillip.

Our main projects are to increase the diversity and extent of native vegetation, the fortnightly penguin and rakali study groups, litter and water quality monitoring, underwater studies of the St Kilda Harbour, the nest box project and sustainable housing.

Membership includes the monthly newsletter, admission to talks by guest speakers, access to specialist project groups, and participation in local plantings.

It’s a great way to study local ecologies, with or without formal qualifications while giving something to our community.
