Friends of the Sandringham railway reserve is a predominantly volunteer group dedicated to creating a 'green corridor' linking the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay through the southern suburbs, following the railway route.

The Sandringham Railway Line contains some of the last surviving patches of pre-European vegetation in the south east inner urban area of Melbourne. The idea of creating an indigenous green corridor, linking the Yarra and the Bay, first came from Rob Scott, who secured funding from the Natural Heritage Trust to plant bird habitat trees along the Sandringham rail line. The group started life as an Earthcare activity, planting a section of the line near Balaclava Station. But it soon grew, and now has it's own independant structure, whilst still operating within Earthcare St Kilda.

The photo above shows some of the difficuilties faced by our group at Balaclava, near the Grosvenor Street bridge. It is now totally transformed, suporting a range of native birds and insects.

The main aims of the Friends of Sandringham Railway Reserve group are:

· Conservation of existing indigenous remnant vegetation along the rail reserve threatened with extinction.

· Revegetation using local trees, shrubs and ground-covers to link the remnant areas

· Attracting local local animals, birds, insects and butterflies to these shelter and food providing plants.

· Developing the community you live in by having a common goal.

· Beautification of the environment
