History

A Local community-based environment group, Earthcare St Kilda - conceived the EcoHouse project in 1999. As a result of 12 months of intensive community design workshops Earthcare presented the EcoHouse Masterplan on World Environment Day 2000. The Masterplan attracted substantial interest and support from the City of Port Phillip and the Victorian Department of Infrastructure. These developments coincided with the Port Phillip EcoCentre (a regional community-based environment group) taking up occupancy of the building; and as leaseholder, ultimately became the formal proponent of the project.

This unique partnership between community groups and local and state government provided a solid foundation on which to build further positive relationships for the project. Subsequently, additional support was received from a range of philanthropic trusts, federal and state government authorities, community groups, individuals, and the business sector.
