West Papua
Annie Feith

Annie has close links with West Papua, and she will be concentrating her talk on Human Rights and Advocacy programs.

Below is part of a submission to the UN Commission of De-colonization to request legal opinion from the International Court of Justice regarding the colonization status of West Papua as some preliminary reading.

Those endorsing the submission wished to draw attention to the urgent issue of the territory formerly known as either Netherlands New Guinea. or West New Guinea. Urgency is required due to the horrific colonial conditions that are more excessive than those experienced by East Timor under the administration of the Republic of Indonesia. Some of the conditions which are characteristic of colonial abuse in West New Guinea include:

  • Restriction of media and NGO access to a nation suffering long term epidemic HIV / AIDS growth rate of 35% (1999-2002)

  • The intentional killing of over a hundred thousand Papuan people by the Indonesian military forces (TNI) during the past forty years of Indonesian administration.

  • Efforts by the Indonesian military (TNI) to discredit and eradicate the Organisasi Papua Merdeka (OPM) political movement for the de-colonization and independence of West New Guinea from the Republic of Indonesia. .

  • The assassination of an elected national leader Mr Theys Eluay in November 2001 by Indonesian military officers,

  • Constant physical threat of death to individuals and their communities if they are identified by the TNI to be supportive of the de-colonization and independence aspirations of the W Papuan peoples,

  • Daily fear and torture of any Papuans taken into Indonesian custody.

  • Many thousands of Papuan people hiding in the jungles of West New Guinea without access to their food gardens while seeking refuge from Indonesian aggression.

  • In excess of ten thousand West Papuan people seeking refuge from Indonesian aggression in neighboring Papua New Guinea.

  • Extensive mineral and forest exploitation by US. Javanese, and other foreign companies without payment to landowners whose communities have suffered forced relocation. decreased health, decreased welfare. and decreased freedoms during if not due to this exploitation.

This submission was prepared by the Australia West Papua Association, and is from the journal "Disarming Times"  by Pax Christi Australia.
