Walk Against Want
Sunday March 6th

Congratulations to Cathie Roby and her team on their gret advertising. If that does not bring more walkers in, nothing will--except of course all our members coming and bringing … as Pooh Bear said about Rabbit "Bring all your friends and relations".

There has been some talk of this being the last year for Walk Against Want as we know it,  so lets hope the Diamond Valley Walk is well supported. Don't forget all monies raised go to program development work. This is not a Tsunami appeal.

Next Group Meeting
Friday March 11th
Carole Wigg on India

Carole will be giving her impressions of development work she saw in India and how development programs are helping modern India.

Carole will discuss how she sees work done by Oxfam and other NGOs fits into India. She will develop the theme of listening to the locals, rather than bringing in outside "experts". This has particular application after the Tsunami crisis.

Beth and Carole would like to lead a discussion on these issues so that group members have the background knowledge and confidence to answer questions that are now being asked about Oxfam's role as an NGO.

Should a country like India that has a large wealthy population still be supported by Oxfam ? Are you familiar with the cost / benefit ratios of various NGO's in the Tsunami appeal ? Do you think the Diamond Valley group should be more active in it's campaigning for change  eg. lobbying and letter writing ?

After seeing last months video some members raised the issue, of whether a child not at school is a child labourer.

Do you have an issue you would like to discuss at the meeting ? This month is your chance to air your views.

Tsunami Film Night
Thursday March 17th
Mainstream Melbourne:
the River Yarra
7:00--9:00 pm Edendale Farm
Gastons Lane. Eltham.

Ken Berryman will be showing excerpts from his archival film about the Yarra River and we have asked a speaker from Melbourne Water to talk about the importance of clean water for the survival of any community and strategies that they use to ensure healthy catchment areas for Melbourne. This will  tie in with the importance of water in much of Oxfam's Program work where there is often not enough or too much water, eg droughts, floods, Cyclones and now a Tsunami.
Cost is $12, delicious supper served. Bookings at Eltham Bookshop. 9439 8700, or Beth on 9439 1716.

Tsunami Bookfair
Saturday May 14th
Senior Citizens Hall
Main Rd. Eltham.
9:00am--9:00pm

We have had a massive response to our request for books. We will be organizing sorting bees shortly.  We have set aside our meeting night on Friday May 13th to set up the Bookfair. Beth and Carole will be allocating a couple of special times for people to bring their collections down to the Eltham Library "Dungeon". For details, Contact Beth 9439 1716 .
