Reflections on our June Meeting With Michael Gordon & Ali Mullaie
All of those present at our last meeting surely went home feeling up lifted after hearing Ali Mullaie speak.
For anyone not present our speaker--Michael Gordon, National Editor of the Age, brought Ali along with him. Ali had, only 2 or 3 days before, been released from Nauru after 4 years of incarceration. We could not help but feel totally offended that such a fine young man had been forced to suffer so much inhumanity and yet remain so positive and caring. He was an inspiration.
So--one practical thing we can do immediately is:

Next Meeting Friday 8th July--Andy Kenyon Forgotten Emergencies & Monitoring & Evaluating Tsunami Relief.
As we told you in the last newsletter, Andy is Monitoring and Evaluating coordinator / Tsunami, for Oxfam Australia, so there will be lots of information on how our money is being used and time for lots of questions.
Andy was previously Oxfam's coordinator for the Horn of Africa and will be talking about forgotten emergencies. We have told Andy that these areas are our focal point of interest at the moment, after 6 months of Tsunami concentration.

Make Poverty History White Wrist Band Days 1 July, 10 September, 10 December 2005
Wearing a white MakePovertyHistory wrist band is your opportunity to show your support for eradicating poverty. Join people around the world and wear your wrist bands in the lead up to three important meetings of world leaders that will determine the future of the battle to eradicate poverty - the G8 (richest nations) meeting, the UN special conference on Millennium Development Goals and the World Trade Organization (WTO) ministerial meeting.
The group has a large supply of Wrist Bands for people willing to do some sales and campaigning.

At our July meeting, we are asking you to bring along some Met Cards for public transport around Melbourne to send to the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre in West Footscray.
Zone 1 & 2 cards and even some Zone 3 would be good as Zone 3 includes places like Dandenong and other outer suburbs where many asylum seekers live.
We've asked Michael Gordon about practical ways we can help Ali, but as Michael is on holidays at the moment, we will have to wait. We don't have an address for Ali, as he has been visiting some of his supporters interstate. Meanwhile we can help others.
The Asylum Seekers Resource Centre has just issued, it's first "Real" newsletter. (in colour and from a proper printer) which will be available at the next meeting. It has news as well as practical information on helping Asylum Seekers.

Bouquets--Winter Solstice Dinner
Many thanks to Ruth & Stephen for their great effort in organizing the Winter Solstice Dinner and to Ant for organizing the Silent Auction. Over all we raised $2,808. Another excellent effort. Praise also to the kitchen staff who slaved away over a hot stove.
