Next Meeting Friday 11th February 2005.
Beth and Carole will talk about their recent trips to India. Beth has plans for a Diamond Valley trip to India next year so come along and whet your appetites. "For many thousands of years, India's social and religious structures have withstood invasions, famines, religious persecutions, political upheavals and many other cataclysms. Few other countries could claim to have a national identity with such a long and vibrant history. To describe India as a land of incredible contrasts is to state the obvious. Although many countries would qualify for such a description in terms of their different ethnic groups, languages, religions, geography and traditions, few can match the diversity and scale found in India." (Lonely Planet Guide to India 10th edition.)
There will also be discussion about the walk and tsunami events.

January Tsunami Meeting
The New Year may be dominated by the tsunami but we hope that other Oxfam work will not get overlooked. An extra meeting was held on 12 January 2005 to discuss our response. Minutes will be sent out. We will be promoting Oxfam at Banyule's Summer in the Park activities at the request of Banyule council. We will approach Nillumbik council too. We made a definite decision to have an extra book fair in May and have started putting out requests for books. A musical/film evening may be arranged before that. We look forward to your participation.

Happy New Year !
We hope you had a good Christmas and wish you all the best for the New Year. Christmas provided two good fund raisers.:
Christmas Trees
The Christmas trees were an even bigger success than before, raising $70,000.0. 2,500 trees were sold. There was a complaint on talkback radio after a promotion of the trees, about the use of four wheel drive clubs for deliveries. This was because of the bad effects of 4WDs on the environment. This issue may be discussed at the next meeting.
Eltham Bookshop Christmas Wrapping
The number of volunteers was light on over Christmas but he staff at the bookshop leant a hand and $400.0 was raised. Meera matched this with another $400.0 and Beth made it up to $1000.0 with money from tea and coffee and Christmas card sales and sent it off as an early response to the Tsunami. Meera wishes to particularly thank Don, Susan, Raj and Lynn for their time in the bookshop wrapping zillions of books. We would like to thank Meera for her generosity and her on-going support of the group.

Asylum Seeker Food Bank
Elizabeth reports that the rice and tins of fish donated to the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre at the Christmas BBQ was much appreciated. She took them in over two weeks, and there was no fish in the Food Bank on the second day. Because most of the people coming are Moslems, fish is about the only meat available in the Food Bank. Occasionally there's some chicken.

This is to be for general funding of Oxfam and should be a major fund raiser. We will need help on the day and most importantly lots of walkers. Personal contact is the best way of getting walkers. Cathie Roby is organising it for the group so please contact her on 9439 9527.

You too can make donations! We can store them under the library as before so you can take them there or bring them to meetings. We are most grateful to the library for their help in this.
