August Group Meeting
Friday August 13 - 8.00pm
"Show and tell"

Wow, there's a lot happening… an election coming (coming, coming…), very active involvement by some of our Group members in the area of asylum seekers, overseas trips by some of our members to some interesting places, participation in council meetings regarding friendship arrangements with East Timor…
Instead of inviting a speaker for August, we are going to draw on the wealth of knowledge and experience in the Group by showing our thoughts, observations and activities to encourage us as a Group and as individuals to remain vigilant and active in lobbying and campaigning to tackle poverty and injustice.
I have asked Ruth and Beth to share their experiences communicating with and supporting asylum seekers. I have also asked Cathie to share with us some of her observations from her recent time in Tibet and Nepal. Pam has also attended a meeting of the Banyule/ East Timor friendship Group, so I have asked her to share what our response and involvement could be.

While I have asked these members to share specifically on the above topics, I'm keen for any of our members to have the opportunity to update us on what they have been up to especially in the areas of lobbying, pollie-watching, asylum seekers… So please come along prepared with something to contribute, time permitting.

"Chilling"
"Traumatic"
"Not without fault"
"This is what war looks like, and worse"
"Bush - a man with a paucity of intelligence, morals, ethics, humanity, integrity and honesty. Yet he is our prime Minister's best friend.
Chilling isn't it?"
"Too serious for a one liner"

Fahrenheit 911

Fahrenheit 911 is the scorching broadside against the presidency of George W. Bush. With one of the most anticipated films in years now in our cinemas, we took the opportunity as a Group to see it on its second day. The above are quotes from some of our Group members. It was good to finally see the film, after reading so many reviews, some damning and others not. I encourage you to see the film, if you haven't already,  and draw your own conclusions. We'll talk briefly about it at our August meeting.

One Million Ethiopians
Signed Big Noise

More than one million Ethiopians have now signed the Big Noise petition to Make Trade Fair. It is a testament of what can be achieved on the ground when Oxfams around the world work together on a campaign that makes a difference to people's lives. The campaign in Ethiopia has also been successful in getting seven members of the Ethiopian Olympic team to sign the petition.
