This Month's  Meeting
Friday September 12th
Liz Mann on
Mozambique
The Mavume Food Security Program

Mavume locality is a remote sparsely populated rural area in South east Mozambique covering approximately 4,600 square kilometers. It lacks basic infrastructure - no running water, no electricity, no sewerage facilities. Education and health care is minimal, so literacy and health statistics are well below the already poor national average. One child in four dies by 5 years of age.

The "Cattle Crops and Community" initiative is supporting five impoverished communities to improve food security through subsidized cereal and vegetable seeds and the establishment of nurseries to grow fruit and nut trees. The project will also offer HIV/AIDs training and cattle restocking.

Liz will explain more about the project, how we can donate, and how the money will be spent.

Water Matters

Antony prepared a very useful package on this campaign for our last meeting, which got a bit swamped by our two special visitors.

Very basically, Water Matters is an international campaign striving to see safe water and improved sanitation made available to the poor. Over one billion people lack access to safe and affordable water.

In July OCAA Activist newsletter highlighted Water Matters, as they are one of the signatories. As it is an on going campaign we will ask Ant to bring us up to speed at the next meeting, and we will have copies of the sample letter for all you activists to get busy with.

Xmas Tree Volunteers Needed

Brian Moran will be activating the Christmas tree project again from about Monday November 17th. It would be good to have a couple of people to help process orders from this time. Volunteers are not expected to help everyday, but to be available for a few days here and there. Volunteers work from Brian's house in Ivanhoe. The project raised almost $40,000 last year.

Xmas Wrapping
Eltham Bookshop

We will again be looking for volunteers to sit in Meera's Bookshop to wrap books in the two weeks before Christmas, starting Monday December 15th, but especially from December 20th until Christmas Day.

A gold coin donation for the wrapping goes to OCAA. This initiative of Meera's raised about $350 last year and it also members a chance talk about Oxfam's work.

Walk Against Want 2004
Sunday March 21st

We hope we can continue our tradition and run another  Walk in 2004. Ray has been organizing the Walk for 30 years and he is looking to retire he says. We raised $10,000 last year so this is by far the biggest fun raiser the group runs.
