The Mayan ruins of Tazumal in Chalchuapa are the most important
in El Salvador. Much of the vast archaealogical zone lies buried under
the nearby town of Chalchuapa. The side featured a restored step pyramid,
a playing field, an inscribed monolith and a museum with fine displays
of the many ritual ornaments, sculptures, vessels and others artefacts
found in the area. The Spanish found the area dominated by the Pipil,
decendants of Nahuatl-speaking Toltecs and Aztecs from Mexico.
Their culture was similar to that of the Aztecs, with hieroglyphics writing,
astronomy and mathematics.
A maize (corn) based agriculture economy supported several cities.
