GENERAL DATA
| EL Salvador, is the smallest country
in Central America. It is located on the Tropic of Cancer. Its ancient
name was "Cuzcatlan", The Country of Natural Jewels.
San Salvador is the largest city in El Salvador and the principal center for the whole country. It takes only a few hours to get from the capital to any point in the country. |

| San Salvador was founded in l525
by the Spanish conqueror Pedro de Alvarado, about 30 kms to the Northeast
where it now stands, near Suchitoto. Three years later it was moved to
its present site; it was declared a city in l546. San Salvador was the
capital of the colonial province of Cuzcatlan.
In l8ll Father Jose Matias Delgado made the first call for the Independence of Central America. San Salvador has been the capital of El Salvador since l839. |
POPULATION.
5.573.000 inhabitants.
In El Salvador there are only two seasons: the rainy season from May to October and the dry season from Nov/April.

Spanish is the national language. Indigenous languages have died out in daily use. Only in a few Indian villages do people still speak Nahuat.
SPANISH ENGLISH
Basic English is taught in most Salvadorian high
schools. This English accent is influenced by The United States of America.
There are public and private schools. The two main Universities
in San Salvador are: Universidad de El Salvador and the Jesuit Universidad
de Centroamerica,( UCA ).
Arts and Poetry are very popular in El Salvador.
Salvador Salazar Arrue, is one of El Salvador's must famous older writers.
His Cuentos de Barro ( Tales of Mud) are very
popular. Other well-known writers from El Salvador include Manlio
Argueta who wrote Un Dia en la Vida, translated
as One Day of Life, and Francisco Rodriguez who wrote
Life for Those Who Come After.
RELIGION

El Salvador is predominantly Roman Catholic. Other churches include the Baptist Church, Church of the Letter - Day Saints, Seventh-Day Adventists, Jehovah's Witnesses, Evangelical and Pentecostal groups. |
There are l00 cents in a colon. Coins are of 5¢,10¢,25¢ and 50¢ cents (centavos).
Notes are in denominations of ¢5, ¢10, ¢25, ¢50 and ¢100.
The exchange rate is ¢8.72 Salvadorian Colones for $1.00 American dollar.
GOVERNMENT
El Salvador has three divisions: Executive Power is held by a President, elected by popular vote to a five year term. Legislative Power is vested in the National Assembly, with 84 members elected to a three year term. The 13 members of the Supreme Court are elected by the National Assembly.
POLITICAL DIVISIONS
The country is divided into 14 provinces:
Ahuachapan, Santa Ana, Sonsonate, San Salvador, Chalatenango, La Libertad, Cuzcatlan, San Vicente, Zacatecoluca, Usulutan, San Miguel, Morazan, Cabanas and La Union.
ECONOMY
Main Resources: Coffee, cotton, corn, sugar cane, rice, soya bean, processed foods, textiles.
El Salvador has her own Airline. Its name is TACA. Our International Airport is located on Comalapa a few kilometers from the capital city.
MEDIA INFORMATION
San Salvador's main Newspapers, both distributed in the morning are La Prensa Grafica and El Diario de Hoy. El Mundo and El Diario Latino are afternoon papers. Eight commercial TV stations broadcast through the country. There are over 100 radio stations.
HOLIDAYS
The festival day of El Salvador del Mundo, patron of El Salvador is August 6. Celebrations including a fair and a big parade are held in San Salvador on this day.
Other celebrations are (Holy Week) Semana Santa, and on December
12, the day of the Virgen de Guadalupe.
